MUDFLOW SIDOARJO PORONG, East-Java, Indonesia (7 32'S, 112 42' 50"E) since 29may2006
21 june 2009 Serang - Another 'Lapindo' like mud volcano has emerged in Serang, Banten province. The geyser-like exhaust produces sand mixed with mud as high as ten meters and also spreads a bad odor. The mud volcano is formed in the village of Astana in the sub-district of Carenang. It started when a worker tried to create a well for drinking water for a local health facility. While he was drilling, the mud fountain suddenly appeared. Immediately the bad odor started to spread. Direct damage is relatively limited, however the local health center that was being constructed has been destroyed. (source: Indanesia.com)
10 june 2009 The Lapindo Mud flowing through the Porong river will impact the coastal ecosystems from eastern Surabaya to Pasuruan on Madura Island, researchers warn. A 2,300-hectare mangrove forest in the Surabaya municipality's Mangrove Center is at risk, as it is only 30 kilometers from the mudflow outlet. Edy Hendras Wahyono, a mangrove researcher at the Nature Conservation and Education Foundation (YPKA), said his team will carry out comprehensive research on potential threats from the mud to the mangrove forest. "We'll analyze the mudflow content, as well as the condition of the mangroves planted by the Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency *BPLS* at the end of the Porong river," he told The Jakarta Post recently, after a presentation about a visibility study on mangrove development before Surabaya Mayor Bambang Dwo Hartono and representatives of cigarette manufaturer PT H.M. Sampoerna. (source:Jakarta Post)
30 may 2009 Jakarta - The police will study the Supreme Court`s decision which rejects the civil lawsuit against Lapindo in connection with the mudflow disaster. In april the Supreme Court turned down the civil lawsuit filed by the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation (YLBHI) on the case, herewith confirming the ruling of the district court in Sidoarjo and the provincial court of East Java. National police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said here on Friday that the police would take a position in line with the court's decision which had been permanent.(source: Antara News)
29 may 2009 Siring - Hundreds of people offered up prayers Friday to mark three years since the day their lives were turned upside down when the East Java mud leak claimed their livelihoods. Victims and other locals said they hoped the government would be more caring and quickly find a solution for their problems. On Thursday in Jakarta, thousands of victims lost their lawsuit at the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the company PT Lapindo Brantas Inc., widely held responsible for the May 29, 2006, disaster through its drilling activities. The lawsuit claimed the firm had neglected the thousands of victims, but the court upheld the verdict of a lower court. The mudflow erupted in a densely populated area known for a vibrant economy, shrimp farms among others, near the East Java coast, and an industrial area. Business was disrupted when the mud began swamping not only residential areas but also the main roads linking Sidoarjo to Malang and other cities. Victims have joined several demonstrations in East Java and Jakarta, including protests on Friday in the capital to commemorate the third anniversary of the disaster. (source: Jakarta Post)
19 may 2009 The mud handling board`s deputy chief Hardy Prasetyo said in Jakarta Monday, that his side is now focusing on overcoming the mud spill on the surface, rather than trying to stop the ourpouring. The mud outpouring still reached 90,000 m3 / day with a temperature of 80-90 degrees Celcius. He said the mud outpouring had reached the stage of a cauldron with a rapid process of deformation reaching four meters a day. (source:Antara News)
7 april 2009 The situation has become more serious. Looking at the most recent satellite images, it is obvious that the high dams around the center mudvolcano have collapsed definitely. This means permanent loss of control of flow of mud, which could result in more devastation. Today the mud cannot be steered anymore towards the spillway channel to be pumped into the Porong River. Which means that all the mudwater now has to flow into the basins, and later will inundate more villages. Additionally, heavy rainfall will cause uncontrolled rise of mudwater levels.
19 febr 2009 When giving attention to the satellite images it appears that the position of the volcano is moving over time. In the period may '08 till dec '08 the mouth of the mudflow has been moving slightly northeast, eating away some part of the high embankment, causing occasional breakage of dams, resulting in more floodings to the northeast.
23 jan 2009 Island of Flores: A team of geologists from Bandung and a geologist from the Nusa Tenggara Mining Agency have left for Mataloko in Golewa district, Ngada regency, to investigate mudflows at the Mataloko geothermal power plant. Drilling at the site began in 2005 to supply electricity to parts of Flores Island. The power plant, however, is not yet operational. There are three mudflow spots, the first spewing on Saturday, followed by two others on Tuesday and Wednesday. Each hole measures about 50 centimeters in diameter, with bursts reaching 1.5 meters high. The mud is 120 degrees Celsius in temperature, spawning a 50-meter-wide mud lake. The eruptions have by now formed a crater 100 meters across. The Hot Mud geysers on the site at the geothermal power plant drilling project at Mataloko village are growing in number and steadily spewing, frightening local residents. Residents are concerned their village will be inundated by the mud, as in the Lapindo mudflow in Porong, Sidoarjo regency, East Java. (source: Jakarta Post)
2 jan 2009 A team of mining experts from ITS, the 10 Nopember Surabaya Institute of Technology, has called on the joint operating body of state-owned PT Pertamina and Petrochina to exercise caution in its drilling, following a recent leakage at its mining concession in the regency of Gresik. Drilling was suspended following the leakage of hot mud from the mining site in Sekar Karung village on Nov. 7, prompting the joint operators to dig a large containment area for the mud. On Wednesday, the ITS team's spokesman, Djaya Laksana, said a new leak would likely appear in the future unless the first one was handled properly, because of highly compressed subterranean gas. (source: JakartaPost)
26 dec 2008 In Gresik, approx 50kms N.W. from Sidoarjo, 3 oil wells jointly operated by Pertamina and Petrochina in Sekarkurung, spewed a three-meter high geyser of toxic gas and mud on friday morning. The upstream oil and gas regulatory agency (BP Migas) told government officials later, that the eruption occurred when well operators were about to replace the drill bit at one well with a new one. BP Migas than stated that the mud and gas eruption in Gresik was harmless and that it was of a different nature from the ongoing mudflow in Sidoarjo. "This is not an extraordinary incident and it's harmless. The public came to the scene out of curiosity," said BP Migas spokesperson Agus Trinugroho near the scene of the incident in Sekar Karung village. (source: JakartaPost)
13 dec 2008 The government has pledged to compensate hundreds of mudflow victims who lived in the villages of Kedungcangkring, Besuki Barat and Pejarakan in Porong district, devastated by the mudflow in February and included in the 2008 state budget. The BPLS already hands out monthly financial aid of Rp 300,000 per person to 6,094 mudflow victims. Lossed assets are reimbursed only for 20 percent of the compensation promised, with the remaining 80 percent to be paid within a year. (source: Jakarta Post)
12 dec 2008 Chief welfare minister Aburizal Bakrie said Thursday that the money being provided to the mudflow victims in Sidoarjo, was not compensation but rather constituted a business deal to acquire their ruined land. He said the mudflow case was a natural disaster and had nothing to do with gas drilling activities under Lapindo. “This is a business transaction, not compensation provided to the victims because there is no legal verdict as yet to determine whether or not Lapindo is guilty in the case,” Aburizal said. (source: Jakarta Post)
1 dec 2008 Mukhtasor, an oceanologist of the 10 November Institute of Technology (ITS), said that according to a remote sensing image taken recently, the sea level in the Madura Strait had decreased to around ten meters. A possible cause is the mudflow, which is easing its way into the sea through the Porong River in Sidoarjo, contributing to the increasing silting up of the Madura Strait, an expert says. This condition could jeopardize heavy-weight cargo vessels going in and out of Tanjung Perak (Surabaya) and Gresik ports. The silting up of the waterways recently sparked strong protest from shipowners and state-owned port operator PT Pelino III, which managed the two ports. (source:Jakarta Post)
31 oct 2008 Geologists concluded that the Lapindo mud volcano disaster, was caused by drilling for oil and gas. The British University of Durham, sent a press release with this statement to AFP on Friday. During a special conference in Cape Town, South Africa, the majority of the 74 attending top scientists in petroleum geology voted for this conclusion. Leading geology professor Richard Davies has led several investigations into Lusi and contends that the quake was too small and too distant to have caused the blowout, whereas the gas well was being drilled only 150 metres (yards) from the volcano. He presented new substantiating data to support his argument which proved that the day before the eruption, the well had taken a huge influx of fluid leading to intolerable pressures. The data "provide a compelling tape recording of the well as it started to leak," Davies told participants of a gathering of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, which ran from Aug. 26-29. (source: Jakarta Post)
23 oct 2008 Finance Minister Sri Mulyani is under heavy pressure since businesspeople and politicians with vested interests have been making attempts to unseat her. Now that the value of the Bakrie Group has dropped significantly, Bakrie is trying to sell off its assets to repay $1.2 billion worth of debts that will mature between the end of this year and early next year. The Bakrie Group, controlled by the family of Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, may make a desperate attempt to get President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to bail them out using either state money or funds from state companies. It seems that most cabinet ministers and even Vice President Jusuf Kalla have made no objections to such a move. But Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, who holds the key to the state coffers, differs and even resists a move that smacks of a raw deal. Because of her persistent anti-graft reform drive at the ministry, she has established more enemies than anyone else in her position previously. Because of her persistence in protecting the state budget from abuse, Mulyani's enemies have launched a covert operation to unseat her.(source: Jakarta Post)
21 oct 2008 London - An international conference was held over the probable cause of the mudflow. Sunaryo Suradi said Durham University geologist Richard Davies had initiated the conference on "Subsurface Sediment Remobilization and Fluid Flow in Sedimentary Basins" to professionally discuss the mudflow in Sidoarjo based on the latest data. (source: Jakarta Post)
19 sept 2008 The remaining residents of Renokenongo village, were knocking down their homes and salvaging their belongings as hot mud and water began inundating the village after a section of the giant encircling dike collapsed recently. "The land and the houses are undocumented but they are ours. We deserve fair compensation. Lapindo should also pay for the hardship". Resident Buang Sucipto said they could do nothing to salvage their houses as the mudflow slowly and surely displaced them from their homes. "The disaster has robbed the villagers of their social well-being," he said here Wednesday. (source: Jakarta Post)
13 sept 2008 President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has denied his minister's claim that efforts have ceased to stanch the Sidoarjo mudflow. Experts from the Surabaya Institute of Technology and the Bandung Institute of Technology urged the government not to unilaterally abandon efforts to stop the mudflow. They suggested two specific methods -- the Bernaoulli technique and a relief well technique -- that can be used to immediately stop the devastating sludge. (source: Jakarta Post)
11 sept 2008 Sidoarjo Mudflow Handling Supervisory Team on Thursday announced that it had found 98 new mudflow spots at the mudflow site in Porong, Sidoarjo. Priyo Budi Santoso, deputy chairman of the House of Representatives team, said the agency handling the mudflow was not doing enough to prevent new mudflow spots. The new spots, Priyo said, would damage more villages around the site. PT Lapindo Brantas spokesman Imam Agustino said they were having difficulty handling the mudflow because they had not figured out what was the main cause of the disaster. (source: Jakarta Post)
28 august 2008 Mud siphoned from Lapindo gas mining site hardens and clogs the Porong River. Local residents have protested the dumping over fears that the four-meter-thick silt will cause the major river to burst its banks in the rainy season. The mud mass has reached between two and five meters from the top of the river, visibly spanning 1 kilometer from its point of entry near the defunct Gempol Toll road bridge in Besuki, Jabon district. The mud has even reached as far as Pejarakan village, 18 km downstream of the dumping site. (source: Jakarta Post)
25 august 2008 Repairs and renovations to the Lapindo mudflow dam on Monday stopped because roadblocks obstructed access to the project site. Hundreds of people claiming to be victims of the mudflow blocked the road, demanding PT Minarak Lapindo Jaya to expedite the payment of the remaining 80 percent of the compensation money. As a result, the dam is now at a critical condition and may soon fail to withhold pressure from the ever expanding mudflow, said Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency spokesperson Ahmad Zulkarnain. "The materials needed for repair and dam erection could not reach the dam. The dam is at a very critical level," Ahmad said, as quoted by Kompas.com. Ahmad said the mudflow was only 30 centimeters away from the top of the dam. (source: Jakarta Post)
25 august 2008 Thousands of mudflow victims from various villages in Sidoarjo, staged a rally at the mudflow site demanding payment for their damaged land and properties. The victims said they had only received 20 percent of the compensation money promised by Lapindo Brantas."Our housing rent is running out. So far we don't know when they will pay the remaining (80 percent)," Basuki Abdullah, one of the rally's coordinators, was telling. The protesters blocked access to the main mudflow area by erecting a bamboo fence, with various posters all around. One of the protesters said, "This land still belongs to us. Whoever builds a mud dams here, needs our permission." (source: Jakarta Post)
19 august 2008 One of the many gas bubbles in the mud flowing in Sidoarjo, exploded on Tuesday. No casualties were reported. Antara reported that a three-meter-high fire sprouted from a gas bubble near Jl. Flamboyan, Siring Barat village. The Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency (BPLS) sent three fire extinguishers to the scene to stop the fire, but locals rejected them. Local neighborhood chief Bambang told Antara that villagers rejected the extinguishers to show political leaders in Jakarta how dangerous the mudflow is. He also said people in Siring were now restless because there were many potentially dangerous gas bubbles emerging in their village. Dozens of similar bubbles have been recorded. (source: Jakarta Post)
19 july 2008 The Attorney General's Office is still showing no signs it will accept a police dossier on the case. Police insist human error was to blame for the mudflow, following testimony by geologists and other experts. However, the A.G.O. said the dossier contained conflicting statements from experts on whether the disaster was really caused by human error. But the police rebuffed this statement, saying they were certain the gas drilling carried out by Lapindo unleased the mudflow. (source: Jakarta Post)
19 july 2008 The cause of the mudflow is still disputed. John Snedden an AAPG member (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) wants to work towards answering the questions, so during the October AAPG Intl. Conference and exhibition in Cape Town, he is putting together a symposium on what caused the disaster, natural - or otherwise. The forum's purpose is "to draw a line under the scientific controversy". (source: AAPG site)
23 june 2008 Sidoarjo - the mud which has settled in the river Porong is becoming dangerously high again. There was an attempt last month to solve the problem, but without succes. On sunday a new outflow pipe has been installed with the help of villagers from Desa Pejarakan, Kecamatan Porong. (source: Mediacenter)
10 june 2008 Paris - Scientists published a new study in academic journal Earth Planetary Science and Letters, reconfirming that drilling, and not an earthquake is considered to be the cause of this mudflow disaster. Lapindo has confirmed that the source data is correct, Durham University said in a press release. Richard Davies, a british professor, added: "The day before the mud volcano started there was a huge kick in the well, which is an influx of fluid and gas into the wellbore. After the kick, the pressure in the well went beyond a critical level." If there had been more protective casing in the borehole, the drillers would have had more chances of controlling this pressure, he said. (source: Antara News)
28 may 2008 Jakarta - The mud volcano that has oozed sludge for two years is collapsing under its own weight, worsening an environmental disaster that has displaced thousands, a study said Wednesday. Sudden collapses of up to three metres (9.8 feet) have been recorded at the centre of the volcano in East Java, the study by Durham University and the Bandung Institute of Technology found. "Such sudden collapses could be the beginning of a caldera -- a large basin-shaped volcanic depression," the institute was quoted by AFP as saying in a statement, adding that the caldera could be as much as 146 metres deep. "(Scientists) propose the subsidence is due to the weight of mud and collapse of rock strata due to the excavation of mud from beneath the surface," it said. (source: Antara News)
12 may 2008 Researchers from Arizona State University, United States, have completed their study into mud volcanoes in Indonesia. They have collected solid and liquid materials from six different mud volcanoes, including the one in Porong, Sidoarjo, East Java, for further research in the USA. “Indonesia has thousands of mud volcanoes but what is happening in Porong is very complex and unique,” said Ramon Arrowsmith, one of the researchers. The research focuses on tectonic activities and geochemical studies. (source:tempointeraktif)
30 april 2008 A nearby oilproductionwell had to be closed due to the subsiding surface. In some locations the surface is subsiding more than 50cm a day, due to the weight of the mudvolume above, and the extraction of mud from below. In the morning, at 07.30am a dam has broken in location 43 over a length of 20m. At the same time another dam has broken at location 41 & 42 threatening houses of people at villages Besuki and Glagaharum. (source: Mediacenter)
12 april 2008 Food supply to victims who temporary found a shelter in Pasar Baru (in Porong) will stop from the 1st of may. The total cost per week is approx. 300.000 Rp. and this money is not available anymore. The reason is also that some of the victims here have received 20% compensation for their property loss, and were told to take care for themselves. (source: radar sidoarjo)
13 march 2008 Jakarta - The Komnas HAM (National Commission on Human Rights) investigation team on the Lapindo mudflow, has urged Lapindo Brantas Inc. to hand over the records of their annual report on oil drilling activities on the location of the mudflow. These records are necessary in order to analyse and reveal what really happened. (source: VHRmedia.com)
1 march 2008 Hundreds of residents of the eastern part of Besuki village, staged a rally on Saturday. They temporarily blocked the bridge of Gempol - Porong road, asking the government to include their village in the mudflow affected areas. The Besuki Timur (Eastern Besuki) residents staged their protest because the government will only include Besuki Barat (Western Besuki) as the mudflow affected area, some demonstrators said. (source: AntaraNews)
28 february 2008 President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono re-confirmed that the compensation plan will be in accordance with Presidential Regulation no.14/2007. Only victims in the area, inside the official mapped disaster area, will be compensated by Lapindo, just outside will be compensated by the government. "The disposal of mud into the Porong river should be conducted quickly to avoid stress when it rains," public works minister Djoko Kirmanto said. The villages Besuki, Kedungcankring and Pejarakan must be vacated. (source:AnataraNews)
24 february 2008 Sidoarjo, - Hundreds of mudflow victims, living outside of the official disaster area, asking for equal compensation, failed to block the Porong main road to protest against the government`s compensation as opposed to the Lapindo compensation. The policy to help the mudflow victims is in line with Presidential Regulation No.14/2007 regarding the Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigating Agency (BPLS) stipulating that compensation for the victims in whose areas have been mapped into the mudflow affected locations will be tackled by PT Lapindo Brantas, but compensation for those living outside the locations will become the government`s responsibility. (source: Antara News)
11 february 2008 After days of torrential rains and strong winds, a dyke has burst, and the hot mud flooded thousands of houses of the village of Besuki. One of the victims, Prayitno, said that 1453 families had been forced out of their houses, after 1 meter of the mud inundated their properties. (source: AntaraNews)
9 february 2008 Several people were injured in a clash between thousands of protesters and security personnel following a ceremony for the soft launch of a housing development for Lapindo mudflow victims in the East Java town of Sidoarjo on Saturday. They want financial compensation for their submerged land and other assets, not housing. The housing is to be developed by Lapindo's main stakeholder, the Bakrie Group, and handed over to mudflow victims, who have yet to receive 80 percent of the compensation money the mining company has promised to pay. Lapindo previously paid 20 percent of the promised compensation almost two years after the leakage of hot mud from the company's mining site inundated the area in May, 2005. (source: Jakarta Post)
9 february 2008 A flammable gasleak with muddy water in a phone-house in the village of Siring, is increasing in pressure. Pipes are attached to divert the water and mud to the sewege drain. The Mud Observation Team (BPLS) advises not to use open fire. (source:Indahnesia.com)
24 january 2008 Jakarta - The East Java police`s plan to stop the investigation into the Lapindo mudflow case in Porong, Sidoarjo district, triggered strong protest from the environmental watch dog (Walhi). During a court session, a team of investigators said that they had information and indications that in a certain depth Lapindo failed to install casings in the process of drilling operations, which had caused the mudflow. Walhi believed the police could use their power in confiscating important documents such as orginal real time charts and geolographs. (source:Antara News)
9 january 2008 Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked the related parties to continue handling the mudflow in Sidoarjo, East Java, in a way to prevent new incidents. "We ask to handle the mudflow correctly. Prevent new incidents such as broken dikes, mudflows and new victims. I stress the importance of the efforts," the president said in a press conference at the office of public works ministry here on Tuesday, after a presentation by Public Works Djoko Kirmanto, followed by a limited cabinet meeting. (source: Antara News)
4 january 2008 Porong, - Barriers built to contain the mud were breached, causing further damage, the police said. Residents in Porong in the East Java province fled from their homes in panic late on Thursday when hot, foul-smelling mud began to flow into the area, covering the nearby railway tracks and a main road. "At least 10 vehicles were buried by one-metre (yard) deep mud, including mine," said Andi Yudianto, a local traffic police chief. (source: Antara News)
29 may 2006 0530am: The day when it started: About 180 m from the borehole, gas and mud suddenly bursted into the air, and houses and nearby factories were gradually innundated by hot volcanic mud. Probably caused by a failure during gas / oil drillings operated by the company Lapindo Brantas. It was said the normal drilling procedure was not followed. The outflow under high pressure, grew gradually bigger. Attempts to plug the borehole, till today (05 january 2008) served no result. COMMENTS & PROSPECTS The high Dams, previously surrounding the Center Mudwell have collapsed. This poses a serious thread in the near future, because excessive mud and rainwater will not flow to the Spillway anymore, where it could be pumped into the Porong River. Now its up to nature to determine where the disaster takes its toll next. The dams cannot be reconstructed, because its foundation cannot find solid ground. The hardened mud beneath is not strong enough to support new dams. The area with basins full of volcanic mud is gradually expanding. More villages are sacrifized to the continuing stream of hot or warm smelly grey muddy water. The affected inhabitants of flooded villages are only partially compensated. Traffic is badly hampered by the floodings of roads and rail, which have become damaged. The concentration of toxic H2S gas and Chlorine is very high, some reports are indicating 20ppm or more. These gases are causing health problems to |
