Mud siphoned from Lapindo gas mining site hardens and clogs the Porong River. Local residents have protested the dumping over fears that the four-meter-thick silt will cause the major river to burst its banks in the rainy season. The mud mass has reached between two and five meters from the top of the river, visibly spanning 1 kilometer from its point of entry near the defunct Gempol Toll road bridge in Besuki, Jabon district. The mud has even reached as far as Pejarakan village, 18 km downstream of the dumping site. (source: Jakarta Post)

Repairs and renovations to the Lapindo mudflow dam on Monday stopped because roadblocks obstructed access to the project site. Hundreds of people claiming to be victims of the mudflow blocked the road, demanding PT Minarak Lapindo Jaya to expedite the payment of the remaining 80 percent of the compensation money. As a result, the dam is now at a critical condition and may soon fail to withhold pressure from the ever expanding mudflow, said Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency spokesperson Ahmad Zulkarnain. "The materials needed for repair and dam erection could not reach the dam. The dam is at a very critical level," Ahmad said, as quoted by Kompas.com. Ahmad said the mudflow was only 30 centimeters away from the top of the dam. (source: Jakarta Post)

25 august 2008

Thousands of mudflow victims from various villages in Sidoarjo, staged a rally at the mudflow site demanding payment for their damaged land and properties. The victims said they had only received 20 percent of the compensation money promised by Lapindo Brantas."Our housing rent is running out. So far we don't know when they will pay the remaining (80 percent)," Basuki Abdullah, one of the rally's coordinators, was telling. The protesters blocked access to the main mudflow area by erecting a bamboo fence, with various posters all around. One of the protesters said, "This land still belongs to us. Whoever builds a mud dams here, needs our permission." (source: Jakarta Post)

One of the many gas bubbles in the mud flowing in Sidoarjo, exploded on Tuesday. No casualties were reported. Antara reported that a three-meter-high fire sprouted from a gas bubble near Jl. Flamboyan, Siring Barat village. The Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency (BPLS) sent three fire extinguishers to the scene to stop the fire, but locals rejected them. Local neighborhood chief Bambang told Antara that villagers rejected the extinguishers to show political leaders in Jakarta how dangerous the mudflow is. He also said people in Siring were now restless because there were many potentially dangerous gas bubbles emerging in their village. Dozens of similar bubbles have been recorded. The Attorney General's Office is still showing no signs it will accept a police dossier on the case. Police insist human error was to blame for the mudflow, following testimony by geologists and other experts. However, the A.G.O. said the dossier contained conflicting statements from experts on whether the disaster was really caused by human error. But the police rebuffed this statement, saying they were certain the gas drilling carried out by Lapindo unleased the mudflow. (source: Jakarta Post)

19 july 2008

The cause of the mudflow is still disputed. John Snedden an AAPG member (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) wants to work towards answering the questions, so during the October AAPG Intl. Conference and exhibition in Cape Town, he is putting together a symposium on what caused the disaster, natural - or otherwise. The forum's purpose is "to draw a line under the scientific controversy". (source: AAPG site)

Sidoarjo - the mud which has settled in the river Porong is becoming dangerously high again. There was an attempt last month to solve the problem, but without succes. On sunday a new outflow pipe has been installed with the help of villagers from Desa Pejarakan, Kecamatan Porong. (source: Mediacenter)

Paris - Scientists published a new study in academic journal Earth Planetary Science and Letters, reconfirming that drilling, and not an earthquake is considered to be the cause of this mudflow disaster. Lapindo has confirmed that the source data is correct, Durham University said in a press release. Richard Davies, a british professor, added: "The day before the mud volcano started there was a huge kick in the well, which is an influx of fluid and gas into the wellbore. After the kick, the pressure in the well went beyond a critical level." If there had been more protective casing in the borehole, the drillers would have had more chances of controlling this pressure, he said. (source: Antara News)

28 may 2008

Jakarta - The mud volcano that has oozed sludge for two years is collapsing under its own weight, worsening an environmental disaster that has displaced thousands, a study said Wednesday. Sudden collapses of up to three metres (9.8 feet) have been recorded at the centre of the volcano in East Java, the study by Durham University and the Bandung Institute of Technology found. "Such sudden collapses could be the beginning of a caldera -- a large basin-shaped volcanic depression," the institute was quoted by AFP as saying in a statement, adding that the caldera could be as much as 146 metres deep. "(Scientists) propose the subsidence is due to the weight of mud and collapse of rock strata due to the excavation of mud from beneath the surface," it said. (source: Antara News)

12 may 2008

Researchers from Arizona State University, United States, have completed their study into mud volcanoes in Indonesia. They have collected solid and liquid materials from six different mud volcanoes, including the one in Porong, Sidoarjo, East Java, for further research in the USA. “Indonesia has thousands of mud volcanoes but what is happening in Porong is very complex and unique,” said Ramon Arrowsmith, one of the researchers. The research focuses on tectonic activities and geochemical studies. (source:tempointeraktif)

30 april 2008

A nearby oilproductionwell had to be closed due to the subsiding surface. In some locations the surface is subsiding more than 50cm a day, due to the weight of the mudvolume above, and the extraction of mud from below. In the morning, at 07.30am a dam has broken in location 43 over a length of 20m. At the same time another dam has broken at location 41 & 42 threatening houses of people at villages Besuki and Glagaharum. (source: Mediacenter)

Food supply to victims who temporary found a shelter in Pasar Baru (in Porong) will stop from the 1st of may. The total cost per week is approx. 300.000 Rp. and this money is not available anymore. The reason is also that some of the victims here have received 20% compensation for their property loss, and were told to take care for themselves. (source: radar sidoarjo)

13 march 2008

Jakarta - The Komnas HAM (National Commission on Human Rights) investigation team on the Lapindo mudflow, has urged Lapindo Brantas Inc. to hand over the records of their annual report on oil drilling activities on the location of the mudflow. These records are necessary in order to analyse and reveal what really happened. (source: VHRmedia.com)

Hundreds of residents of the eastern part of Besuki village, staged a rally on Saturday. They temporarily blocked the bridge of Gempol - Porong road, asking the government to include their village in the mudflow affected areas. The Besuki Timur (Eastern Besuki) residents staged their protest because the government will only include Besuki Barat (Western Besuki) as the mudflow affected area, some demonstrators said. 28 february 2008

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono re-confirmed that the compensation plan will be in accordance with Presidential Regulation no.14/2007. Only victims in the area, inside the official mapped disaster area, will be compensated by Lapindo, just outside will be compensated by the government. "The disposal of mud into the Porong river should be conducted quickly to avoid stress when it rains," public works minister Djoko Kirmanto said. The villages Besuki, Kedungcankring and Pejarakan must be vacated. (source:AnataraNews)

24 february 2008

Sidoarjo, - Hundreds of mudflow victims, living outside of the official disaster area, asking for equal compensation, failed to block the Porong main road to protest against the government`s compensation as opposed to the Lapindo compensation. The policy to help the mudflow victims is in line with Presidential Regulation No.14/2007 regarding the Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigating Agency (BPLS) stipulating that compensation for the victims in whose areas have been mapped into the mudflow affected locations will be tackled by PT Lapindo Brantas, but compensation for those living outside the locations will become the government`s responsibility. 11 february 2008

After days of torrential rains and strong winds, a dyke has burst, and the hot mud flooded thousands of houses of the village of Besuki. One of the victims, Prayitno, said that 1453 families had been forced out of their houses, after 1 meter of the mud inundated their properties. (source: AntaraNews)

9 february 2008

Several people were injured in a clash between thousands of protesters and security personnel following a ceremony for the soft launch of a housing development for Lapindo mudflow victims in the East Java town of Sidoarjo on Saturday. They want financial compensation for their submerged land and other assets, not housing. The housing is to be developed by Lapindo's main stakeholder, the Bakrie Group, and handed over to mudflow victims, who have yet to receive 80 percent of the compensation money the mining company has promised to pay. Lapindo previously paid 20 percent of the promised compensation almost two years after the leakage of hot mud from the company's mining site inundated the area in May, 2005. A flammable gasleak with muddy water in a phone-house in the village of Siring, is increasing in pressure. Pipes are attached to divert the water and mud to the sewege drain. The Mud Observation Team (BPLS) advises not to use open fire. (source:Indahnesia.com)

24 january 2008

Jakarta - The East Java police`s plan to stop the investigation into the Lapindo mudflow case in Porong, Sidoarjo district, triggered strong protest from the environmental watch dog (Walhi). During a court session, a team of investigators said that they had information and indications that in a certain depth Lapindo failed to install casings in the process of drilling operations, which had caused the mudflow. Walhi believed the police could use their power in confiscating important documents such as orginal real time charts and geolographs. (source:Antara News)

9 january 2008

Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked the related parties to continue handling the mudflow in Sidoarjo, East Java, in a way to prevent new incidents. "We ask to handle the mudflow correctly. Prevent new incidents such as broken dikes, mudflows and new victims. I stress the importance of the efforts," the president said in a press conference at the office of public works ministry here on Tuesday, after a presentation by Public Works Djoko Kirmanto, followed by a limited cabinet meeting. (source: Antara News)

4 january 2008

Porong, - Barriers built to contain the mud were breached, causing further damage, the police said. Residents in Porong in the East Java province fled from their homes in panic late on Thursday when hot, foul-smelling mud began to flow into the area, covering the nearby railway tracks and a main road. "At least 10 vehicles were buried by one-metre (yard) deep mud, including mine," said Andi Yudianto, a local traffic police chief. (source: Antara News)

NEWS ARCHIVE / HISTORY

29 may 2006 0530am:

The day when it started: About 180 m from the borehole, gas and mud suddenly bursted into the air, and houses and nearby factories were gradually innundated by hot volcanic mud. Probably caused by a failure during gas / oil drillings operated by the company Lapindo Brantas. It was said the normal drilling procedure was not followed. The outflow under high pressure, grew gradually bigger. Attempts to plug the borehole, till today (05 january 2008) served no result.

COMMENTS & PROSPECTS

The area with basins full of volcanic mud is further expanding. More villages are sacrifized to the continuing stream of warm smelly grey muddy water. Victims are only partially compensated. Traffic is badly hampered by the floodings of roads and rail, which have become damaged. The concentration of H2S gas and Chlorine is very high, some reports are indicating 20ppm or more. These gases are causing health problems to people living nearby. Trees are dying and loosing their leafs of the poisonous gasses. (like in autumn, but autumn does not exist on Java). There is no solution in reach. If it is true that the gaspressure comes from the wellbore in the Kujung Formation, the gas outflow could sustain for a long period of time, for how many years is yet unknown. (04may08)
